Shetland Climbing Symposium

Symposium 2013

UPDATE: 20 May. Unfortunately we have had to postpone the symposium for this year. We will still get out climbing that weekend with a BBQ and everyone is welcome but the full event will wait until next year. Sorry for any inconvenience, I know many had booked holiday etc.

Thursday 20th – Monday 24th June 2013.

The first ever symposium, organised by Climb Shetland and It is for climbers in Shetland and those wanting to visit… It will be based in Eshaness in the North-west of Shetland and you can camp at Paul & Claire’s or Al & Aurore’s house, stay at the Braewick Wigwams or Jonnie Notions Bod. The plan is for the main events over a long weekend:

  • Thursday 20th – Evening climb (venue tbc.)
  • Friday 21st – Climb @ Grind of the Navir. Evening BBQ at Paul & Claire’s. Midnight solstice climb @ Raasmi
  • Saturday 22nd – Climb @ Nibon. Evening at Paul & Claires
  • Sunday 23rd – Climb @ Bressay (crag tbc.) Meal in Lerwick.
  • Monday 24th – Climb @ Spoot Hellier. Finish

Plenty of other options for iffy weather like DWS, bouldering, kayaking etc.

Anyone is welcome, but please get in touch first just in case numbers are getting high. To get the most out of the weekend you don’t need to be climbing hard (Severe is fine), but being up for leading would certainly help. The climbing here isn’t all hard, most of it isn’t technically, but it can be intimidating for those not used to sea cliffs. New climbers are welcome but it isn’t an “introduction to climbing” weekend, so you might not be able to climb every day. It will be free, although we’ll ask for donations to cover marquee hire and other bits and bobs, plus BBQ food.
